Valuable Fastener Tips
These tips on fastener use will help get the job done. If you have a fastener related tip or trick to share, e-mail it to us at newsletter@boltdepot.com.
Using Nuts In Hard To Reach Places
Sometimes you just can’t get to the spot where you need
a nut to go while fastening things. One way to solve this problem is
to use epoxy to glue a serrated
flange nut (a nut with a built in washer that is serrated to act
as a lock washer) into place before assembly so it is ready when you
need it. A short screw can be used to hold the nut in place while the
epoxy hardens.
Thanks to SNUCK for the great tip.
For those already assembled jobs, consider hot gluing a serrated
flange nut to the end of a dowel or coat-hanger. Use the dowel to
position the nut behind the hole then thread through. The hot glue will
break free with minimal difficulty and the serrated nut will dig in
allowing you to tighten the fastener.
'Setting' Cement Screws
It is often difficult to get a cement screw to 'set' in the last 1/4 of an inch or so. Don points out that using an impact driver alleviates this problem. He also suggests using a screw driver/socket driver hit with a hammer to achieve a similar effect when an impact driver is not available.
Thanks Don
Safety Tip
With winter upon us, Bolt Depot would like to remind everyone to check radon detectors and fire detectors. Radon and fire are of particular concern during the winter when homes and workshops are sealed and the heat is on.
