ACQ Type Pressure Treated Lumber

When using ACQ pressure treated lumber you should use stainless steel fasteners for maximum corrosion resistance. Zinc plated fasteners corrode quickly in this type of PT lumber due to the high copper content. In addition aluminum flashing should never be used with ACQ lumber as it is especially prone to this type of corrosion. The best choice is copper flashing.

Pulling a Joint Together

A newsletter subscriber pointed out that in the last newsletter we neglected to mention that drilling a full clearance hole through the first material will allow you to pull the joint together when using a fully threaded fastener.

Extracting a Bolt with a Broken or Rounded Off Head

Another subscriber has this tip. Need to extract stuck a bolt with a broken off or rounded off head that is above the surface? Weld on a nut that fits over the bolt or rounded off head. This provides an over size surface to use your wrench on and the heat from welding will often loosen the bolt.
