Using Sheet Metal Screws

When screwing into thin sheet metal, try using a nail to create a dimple and small hole where you want to place the screw. Then screw directly into the hole without drilling a larger pilot hole. The sheet metal will deform around the screw creating a sleeve that will increase the screw's holding power.

Pulling a Wooden Joint Together

To eliminate gaps when joining two pieces of wood together, always use a wood screw. The smooth shank section above the threads on a wood screw helps the screw to pull the joint together by eliminating cross-threading (having the screw threads engaged in both pieces). Cross-threading causes the screw to sink into the outside piece rather than pulling the joint tight.
